Experts push for women’s empowerment in agriculture.

Experts, policymakers and activists from across Africa have gathered for a two-day forum aimed at strengthening the role of women in agriculture and food systems. The event, organized in partnership with the German government through GIZ, aims to amplify women’s voices while promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Speaking at the forum, Laban Kiplagat, Permanent Secretary for Agricultural Engineering in Kenya’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development, emphasized the critical role women play in food production. He emphasized that the government is fully committed to inclusive agricultural development, ensuring that women and youth actively contribute to food security.

“This forum provides a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and engage with policymakers and researchers. We need to promote women’s participation in agriculture,” said Kiplagat.

Similarly, Theresa Herbold, Senior Policy Officer at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, emphasized the need for strong international cooperation. She noted that experts from 20 countries have come together to build resilient and inclusive food systems.

She noted that women play a key role in ensuring food and nutrition security in households and communities.

“As a government, we are fully committed to supporting women in agriculture. We must provide them with the resources and opportunities they need,” Yegot said.

Ultimately, the forum aims to develop policies and strategies that empower women farmers. By ensuring access to training, financial support and markets, stakeholders hope to increase productivity and drive sustainable agricultural growth across Africa.
