Kenya Honors Top Innovators at First-Ever National Research Awards.

The National Research Fund (NRF) marked the conclusion of the inaugural Kenya National Research Festival 2024 with a grand celebration, announcing the winners of the prestigious National Outstanding Research Awards. These awards, launched to recognize exceptional contributions to research and innovation, are set to become a cornerstone in highlighting the importance of research in Kenya’s socio-economic development.

Held at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi, the awards ceremony was a significant event that drew researchers, academics, government officials, and international dignitaries. The presence of the Chair of the Jury, the Chair of the NRF, and the Cabinet Secretary for Education underscored the critical role of research in shaping Kenya’s future. Their participation demonstrated a collective commitment to advancing Kenya’s research capabilities and leveraging scientific discovery to address pressing national challenges.

The awards highlighted several researchers whose groundbreaking work has had significant impacts across various sectors. Professor Mary Abukutsa-Onyango was celebrated for her pioneering research in agricultural sciences, particularly her promotion of indigenous vegetables. Engineering also took the spotlight with recognition given to Eng. Aggrey Shitsukane Shisiali for his contributions to electrical and electronics engineering. His expertise in automation and telecommunications has enhanced technical education standards in Kenya, preparing students to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. His work in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) exemplifies the role of engineering in driving economic growth and development.

The awards ceremony also introduced the Life Time Research Awards, honoring researchers whose work has made lasting contributions to Kenya’s scientific community. Professor David Musyimi Ndetei received the Outstanding Social Sciences Life Time Award for his pioneering work in psychiatry and mental health. His research has advanced mental health services and policies, benefiting Kenya and the global community. Professor Ruth Nduati was honored for her groundbreaking work in preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, setting global standards that have improved healthcare outcomes. Meanwhile, Professor Paul Kamau Mbugua’s research in plant taxonomy, biosystematics, and biodiversity conservation has enriched both national and international scientific knowledge.

Julius Migos Ogamba, the Cabinet Secretary for Education,represented by Mr Fredrick Ndambuki, Secretary, of Education delivered a keynote address emphasizing the importance of research in addressing Kenya’s pressing issues, including food security, education, and climate change. He praised the NRF for its commitment to nurturing a culture of research and innovation and highlighted the essential role of collaboration and partnership in driving scientific progress. His words resonated with the audience, reaffirming the government’s dedication to supporting research initiatives that align with national development goals.

The Kenya National Research Festival 2024 served not only as a showcase of groundbreaking discoveries but also as a platform for dialogue, collaboration, and inspiration. Adding to the vibrancy of the festival was the Young Scientists Kenya (YSK) 7th National Science and Technology Exhibition. This segment of the event brought together over 1,000 students from 390 schools across all 47 counties, providing a platform for young innovators to showcase their talents. By highlighting the creativity and potential of the next generation, the festival underscored the importance of investing in young scientists and researchers who will continue to drive Kenya’s progress.
