RTI’s 61st Graduation Ceremony
On December 11, 2014, the Railway Training Institute (RTI) hosted its 61st graduation ceremony. A total of 1,415 graduates from the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years celebrated their achievements. The event took place at RTI’s campus in Nairobi. It highlighted RTI’s critical role in shaping Kenya’s transportation and infrastructure sectors.
Leadership and Dignitaries
Mohamed Daghar, Principal Secretary for the State Department of Transport, presided over the ceremony. He praised the graduates for their resilience and dedication. Dignitaries, including the Managing Director of Kenya Railways and members of the Board of Directors, attended the event. This underscored RTI’s commitment to producing highly skilled professionals for the transportation industry.

RTI’s Legacy in Railway Training
In his keynote address, the PS emphasized RTI’s legacy as a center of excellence in railway training. For over a century, RTI has specialized in training professionals for both narrow-gauge and standard-gauge railway systems. This training equips them to manage and operate Kenya’s growing railway infrastructure. RTI’s enduring contribution has made it a cornerstone in national development and regional integration.
Promoting Inclusivity and Gender Equality
The celebration also highlighted RTI’s strides in fostering inclusivity and gender equality. Noting the near-equal representation of male and female graduates, Daghar commended county governments for supporting women in pursuing careers in transportation. He remarked, “We are proud of the progress made in achieving gender balance. This marks a significant shift in how we approach education and empowerment in this critical sector.”
Regional Influence and Educational Excellence
RTI’s influence extends beyond Kenya’s borders, attracting students from across East Africa. They come to benefit from its advanced curriculum and facilities. The institution’s growing regional appeal positions Kenya as a leader in rail transport education and a hub for developing technical expertise.
Government Investment in Railway Infrastructure
The government’s ongoing investment in railway infrastructure, including the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and modernization of the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR), was lauded during the event. These initiatives aim to enhance connectivity and boost trade, creating a wealth of opportunities for graduates.
Graduate Success and Industry Integration
Graduates from RTI are highly regarded in the workforce, with many securing positions in key institutions such as Kenya Railways, the Kenya Ports Authority, and other maritime and logistics agencies. Their comprehensive training, which includes industry-recognized certifications, ensures they are well-prepared to take on diverse roles in the transportation and logistics sectors.
Government’s Commitment to Education and Empowerment
As the ceremony concluded, Daghar reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting institutions like RTI, which are pivotal to Kenya’s economic growth. For the graduates, the event marked not just the culmination of years of hard work but also the beginning of promising careers in a sector vital to the country’s future development.
