Kenya’s Solar Power Now Pays Twice: ARK Turns Sunshine into Cash.

Nairobi, 16th June 2025 – Kenya’s sunshine isn’t just lighting homes anymore—it’s also filling wallets. Thanks to Africa Renewables Katalyst (ARK), mini-grid operators are now earning extra cash by selling their clean energy credits globally.

For years, small solar power producers have struggled with high costs and low profits. Many operate in remote areas, supplying electricity where the national grid can’t reach. But with ARK’s innovative platform, these operators can now trade Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), turning every ray of sunlight into a revenue stream.

“Clean energy should pay, not just power,” says Brian Munene, ARK’s CEO. His company connects mini-grids to international buyers—corporations looking to offset carbon emissions. Each megawatt-hour of solar energy earns a certificate, which ARK helps sell worldwide.

The impact is clear. In Kisumu County, a mini-grid operator boosted earnings through REC sales. The extra income funded upgrades, new jobs, and stable tariffs for customers.

Beyond profits, ARK’s model strengthens communities. Reliable power means better services, local employment, and more investment in renewables. It also supports Kenya’s climate goals, positioning the country as a green energy leader.

“Kenya can prove that clean energy lifts economies,” Munene adds. From solar to hydro, even remote projects can now profit while cutting carbon.
