Nairobi, October 8, 2025 — Picture this: you call a friend, and instead of the familiar ring, a short video lights up your screen your favorite artist dancing, a funny clip, or a breathtaking Kenyan sunset. It’s no longer just a call; it’s a vibe. This is the fresh digital rhythm sweeping across Kenya, powered by Vybz Call, Safaricom’s newest innovation in partnership with Huawei.

Launched on Tuesday, Vybz Call introduces Kenya’s first-ever Video Ring Back Tone (VRBT) service a playful, creative twist that turns caller waiting time into a space for emotion, entertainment, and self-expression.

For millions who grew up with Skiza, the beloved ring back tone that brought music to calls nearly 20 years ago, this new service feels like a leap into the future. Only this time, the vibe doesn’t just sound it comes alive on screen.

Vybz Call gives our customers control, creativity, and choice. We’re turning everyday moments into opportunities for personal expression,” said Safaricom Chief Technology and Information Officer, James Maitai. “Whether it’s a favorite music clip, a brand story, or a personal message callers can now connect in new, exciting ways.”

The service is currently available on Safaricom Neon devices, select Samsung and Oppo models, and Xiaomi’s Redmi A series. Support for Vivo is expected in 2026. Users can activate it by dialing *860# or through the Safaricom App on vybcall.safaricom.com.

For creators, Vybz Call opens new possibilities. It allows Kenyan artists, influencers, and brands to share short, catchy videos that not only entertain but can also earn revenue. It’s a creative stage built into one of life’s simplest acts making a phone call.

Huawei Kenya CEO Gavin Gao described the launch as a blend of innovation and human emotion. “Vybz Call celebrates Kenya’s vibrant creative spirit. It gives people new ways to express themselves and businesses smarter tools to engage their audiences,” he said.

From Nairobi’s busy streets to villages upcountry, excitement is building. Many see it as a chance to personalize their digital lives and transform every call into something more than just a ring into a mood, a memory, a vibe.

Safaricom’s journey from Skiza to Vybz Call shows how far Kenya’s mobile culture has evolved. What started as music for callers is now becoming visual storytelling — short, vivid moments that speak, dance, and connect, even before “hello.”

As Kenya becomes the first country in Africa to roll out the Video Ring Back Tone service, one thing is clear: calling will never sound or look the same again.

Because with Vybz Call, every call begins with a feeling. Every ring starts with a vibe.
