Rwaka, Kenya, November 3, 2025 – Kenya’s leading telecommunications giant, Safaricom, has kicked off celebrations marking its 25th anniversary with a series of exciting initiatives aimed at giving back to customers and communities across the country.

Speaking during the launch at Ruaka, Safaricom Chief Executive Officer Peter Ndegwa unveiled three major programs under the Silver Jubilee celebrations “Shangwe at 25,” “Safaricom Green Box,” and “Citizen of the Future.”

Mr. Ndegwa described the milestone as a celebration of Safaricom’s journey from its humble beginnings on the year 2000, to becoming a regional powerhouse with over 60 million customers across Kenya and Ethiopia.

“We are celebrating the role that Safaricom has played in connecting people to people, people to opportunity, and people to knowledge,” he said.

Rewarding Customer Loyalty

The first initiative, “Shangwe at 25,” is a nationwide consumer promotion designed to reward customers for their loyalty. For the next two months, Safaricom users will stand a chance to win daily and weekly prizes, including cash, airtime, free M-Pesa transactions, and mobile phones.

A highlight of the promotion will see 25 lucky Kenyans each win KSh1 million, in line with the 25-year milestone. Each winner will also receive an additional KSh250,000 to support a community project of their choice ranging from school renovations to women’s groups and health facilities.

Ndegwa assured Kenyans of fairness and transparency, explaining that winners will be selected randomly through Safaricom’s automated systems.

“Every transaction counts. Whether you send money via M-Pesa, buy data bundles, pay with Lipa na M-Pesa, or make calls—each activity earns you an entry,” he said.

Safaricom expects between four and five million winners across the country during the promotion period, which will run until early January 2026.

The Safaricom Green Box

The second initiative, Safaricom Green Box, will spread joy across Kenya during the festive season. Modeled after last year’s Sambaza Furaha campaign, the Green Box will tour towns and villages in various forms from trucks and canters to handcarts and backpacks bringing entertainment, giveaways, and surprises to communities.

“Expect fun, music, and even gifts ranging from chickens to goats and other exciting prizes,” said Ndegwa.

The Green Box campaign will run through November and December, aiming to reach customers in all corners of the country.

Investing in the Future

Safaricom’s third announcement, Citizen of the Future, will serve as an umbrella program for the company’s education and empowerment projects. The initiative will support schools with infrastructure development, teacher training in digital learning, and scholarships for students in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

“As we celebrate 25 years, we are also looking ahead. The next 25 years will be about preparing citizens of the future empowered through education, technology, and opportunity,” Ndegwa emphasized.

The company reaffirmed its continued commitment to supporting key areas such as healthcare, education, and economic empowerment, alongside its passion for Kenyan sports and community development.

As the Silver Jubilee celebrations take shape, Safaricom’s message is clear its story of innovation, growth, and community connection is far from over.

“We thank our customers for being part of this journey. Together, we will continue to transform lives for the next 25 years and beyond,” Ndegwa said.
