Kenya has risen as a global leader in 2024, achieving remarkable milestones in diplomacy, diaspora engagement, and climate leadership. Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, delivering a statement at the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs today, outlined the successes that have bolstered Kenya’s international influence.

Key achievements include transformative bilateral agreements with Japan, Uganda, and the USA. Japan pledged Ksh 15 billion for geothermal energy and Ksh 1 billion for medical oxygen production, while the USA recognized Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, opening doors for enhanced trade and investment.

Nairobi has cemented its role as Africa’s diplomatic hub, hosting over 100 diplomatic missions and global events such as the Africa Climate Summit. Significant investments, including a vaccine production center under the International Vaccine Institute, further positioned the city as a hub for multilateral cooperation.

Kenya’s State Department for Diaspora Affairs has been instrumental in enhancing the welfare of Kenyans abroad. Labor agreements with Germany, Austria, and Saudi Arabia secured jobs for over 1,700 Kenyans, while diaspora remittances hit Ksh. 260 billion in five months. Programs like Mukulimas Majuu also provided young professionals with opportunities to work abroad.

Globally, Kenya demonstrated strong leadership in climate initiatives. At COP29, President William Ruto championed the Nairobi Declaration, increasing climate financing to $300 billion and advancing Africa’s renewable energy agenda. Kenya’s advocacy for the Global Plastic Treaty further showcased its commitment to environmental sustainability.

In peacebuilding, Kenya played a pivotal role through initiatives like the Tumaini Peace Initiative in South Sudan and the deployment of over 600 police officers to Haiti under the Multinational Security Support Mission. These efforts highlighted the nation’s dedication to fostering regional and global stability.

As 2024 concludes, Kenya’s accomplishments in diplomacy, climate advocacy, and peacebuilding reflect its growing prominence on the global stage. The nation looks forward to 2025 with a determination to sustain and expand these achievements.
