Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura delivers a powerful call to action during the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV at KICC.
As the world observes the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), the Kenyan government has reiterated its unwavering stance against the vice. Speaking at the Shimba Hills Conference Hall at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), Government Spokesperson Hon. Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, CBS, condemned all forms of violence and stressed the urgent need for collective action to protect vulnerable groups. He stressed that safety and dignity should be fundamental rights for all Kenyans, regardless of gender.
The grim reality of GBV in Kenya underscores the need for urgent action. In the last three months, 97 cases have been reported, adding to the 150 femicides recorded last year. Globally, the situation is equally alarming, with a woman losing her life to GBV every 10 minutes. Dr Mwaura expressed grave concern at these statistics, noting that women are increasingly at risk not only in their homes, but also in the workplace, where safety should never be compromised.

The government is implementing a multi-faceted approach to address this growing challenge. Key among these measures is the prioritisation of women’s safety and empowerment, coupled with efforts to ensure gender inclusion in leadership roles. Dr Mwaura underscored the Government’s commitment to achieving the 2/3 gender rule, a critical step towards gender equality that will improve representation and decision-making at all levels.
In his address, Dr Mwaura called on all Kenyans to unite in creating a safer environment for all. He emphasized the importance of social solidarity in combating harmful practices that perpetuate GBV. By fostering a culture where anti-GBV laws are respected and upheld, communities can build homes and workplaces where safety and mutual respect prevail.
