Nairobi, Kenya – Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala has signaled a strategic shift ahead of an anticipated by-election, saying the party is open to negotiations with coalition partners and ready to adapt based on the political mood on the ground.
“We are a listening party. We look at the emerging dynamics, and if our opposition partners convince us otherwise, we will sit down with them,” said Malala during a press briefing held on July 17, 2025.
He emphasized that ongoing discussions with the Democratic Party are progressing well and expressed confidence that a consensus would be reached soon.
Malala noted that the party’s constitution provides for two options elimination or scientific polling to select a candidate.
“Since our by-election is time-bound, we have decided to open up for elimination,” he said, hinting that the final approach would depend on unfolding political circumstances.
Malala also announced a major boost for the party, revealing that two formidable candidates had joined their ranks. “My party reaped big after Hon. Aden Mohammed from Banisa and Edgar Busiega from Malava Constituency ditched their parties to join the winning team,” he said. “
The two candidates, who are frontrunners in their respective constituencies, were warmly received.”Responding to potential challenges from rival candidates, Malala reaffirmed the party’s grassroots strength, stating they were unfazed by external influence.

“Even if William Ruto decides to be the chairperson, we are ready. We are rooted in the ground,” he declared.
Malala directly targeted Kasongo, warning that the upcoming by-election would serve as a wake-up call. “Members of the UDA party who were elected will resign and go back to the by-election just to teach Kasongo a lesson,” he said, adding, “In 2027, it is inevitable that he will be the first resident of Kenya to go one term.”
