ODM Nairobi Chairlady Catherine Okoth Faces Growing Calls to Step Aside After 20 Years in Office.

Nairobi, September 10, 2025 – Catherine Okoth, the long-serving Chairlady of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in Nairobi County, is facing mounting criticism from party members who accuse her of stagnating the branch’s growth.

Okoth, who has held the influential seat for two decades, also serves as a nominated Member of the County Assembly (MCA). Party members argue that her extended stay in office has slowed development and denied fresh leadership a chance to take charge.

Her leadership came under further scrutiny after she was thrust into the spotlight during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests in Nairobi, where she was severely injured and her vehicle vandalized by protesters. The incident sparked public debate on her role both as a county leader and a key ODM figure.

Throughout her career, Okoth has been recognized as the face of ODM women in Nairobi, serving not only as Chairlady but also as a voice for women in the party. Still, her critics insist that her lengthy tenure has bred complacency and left the county branch lagging behind other regions.

As ODM gears up for its next internal elections, questions remain on whether Okoth will defend her position or step aside in the wake of pressure from within the party. Her decision is expected to shape the direction of the Nairobi branch and could determine whether the party embraces new leadership or sticks with the old guard.
