Safaricom Launches Biggest M-PESA Upgrade, Ushering in AI-Powered Future.

Nairobi, September 19, 2025 – Safaricom has unveiled the largest upgrade to its M-PESA platform in a decade, marking a bold step into the future of financial technology.

The upgrade, scheduled for the early hours of Monday, September 22, introduces Fintech 2.0 — a next-generation core platform designed to deliver speed, resilience, and advanced artificial intelligence.

With this transformation, M-PESA’s capacity will expand from 4,500 to 6,000 transactions per second, with room to scale up to 12,000 as demand grows. The system will also operate on active-active architecture across multiple hosting sites, guaranteeing higher resilience and minimal interruptions.

The new platform embeds cutting-edge AI to detect fraud, enable self-healing, and power real-time monitoring. Built on cloud infrastructure, it ensures instant scalability, faster deployment of products, and personalized solutions for both individuals and businesses.

Safaricom Group CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa described the move as a bold investment in the future of Africa’s financial services, reaffirming the company’s commitment to innovation, customer trust, and inclusivity.

For customers, the transition means a more secure, reliable, and smarter platform that supports everyday transactions while powering the continent’s digital economy. From payments and savings to insurance, e-commerce, and cross-border services, Fintech 2.0 sets the stage for the next generation of mobile money.

Since its launch in 2007, M-PESA has grown into Africa’s largest fintech ecosystem with over 30 million active users in Kenya alone. This milestone upgrade ensures that M-PESA remains at the heart of Africa’s financial transformation — simple, accessible, and ready for the future.

Customers are advised to plan their transactions ahead of the maintenance window between 12:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. on Monday.
