Toto Mass Kids’ Day Out Lights Up Nairobi as Families Embrace Safe Cycling and Smart Saving

Nairobi came alive today as Unaitas SACCO and Critical Mass Nairobi hosted a vibrant edition of the Toto Mass Kids’ Day Out at the Children’s Traffic Park on Nyerere Road. The event drew hundreds of children, parents, and cycling enthusiasts, turning the park into a colourful hub of fun, learning, and family bonding.

The atmosphere began building as early as 8:00am. Families streamed in with brightly coloured bicycles, helmets, and whistles, creating a cheerful scene filled with excited young riders. Energy levels rose quickly, and by 9:00am the main ride kicked off. Critical Mass marshals led the children through guided routes, while Nairobi Traffic Police officers ensured the morning remained safe, orderly, and highly educative.

Throughout the session, police officers demonstrated crucial road safety practices. They taught young cyclists about road signs, lane discipline, protective gear, and the meaning of children’s traffic rules. Their presence reassured parents and helped the children feel confident as they navigated the tracks.

Away from the cycling lanes, Unaitas SACCO activated a lively Family Engagement Zone. Here, children learned the basics of money, saving, and responsibility through interactive games and short, engaging tutorials. Parents received guidance on nurturing a savings culture at home. Unaitas also showcased its Jasiri Account, a flagship product that encourages children to begin their financial journey early and grow into disciplined savers.

The day attracted strong support from families across Nairobi, traffic officers, youth cycling advocates, early childhood educators, and community wellness organisations. Many parents praised the initiative, noting that safe and structured cycling spaces remain limited in most Nairobi neighbourhoods. For them, Toto Mass offered a rare chance for their children to enjoy active play in a secure environment.

Unaitas SACCO Head of Marketing, Kennedy Karinga, expressed pride in the event’s impact. “This event proves that when children feel safe, they thrive,” he said. “We are proud to contribute to a culture where children can play, ride, and learn. Importantly, we used this opportunity to remind families that financial confidence begins early. Every shilling saved today gives our children a stronger tomorrow.”

A representative from Critical Mass Nairobi echoed this sentiment, adding that the growing turnout shows rising demand for child-friendly public spaces. “Toto Mass has become a movement of its own, bringing together families who want safer streets and healthier cities,” the representative said. “Today’s turnout reflects a growing demand for intentional, child-friendly public spaces in Nairobi.”

The event achieved several notable highlights. Organizers recorded an impressive turnout of children aged three to fourteen. More than 300 children and over 100 parents participated in guided cycling sessions. The day also featured obstacle courses, bike-handling lessons, safety demonstrations, and creative games. Financial literacy sessions by Unaitas SACCO added a thoughtful and empowering touch to the festivities.

Unaitas SACCO remains one of Kenya’s leading deposit-taking cooperatives, serving over 400,000 members across 13 counties. Its mission focuses on transforming lives through accessible and innovative financial solutions that uplift families and communities.

Critical Mass Nairobi continues to champion safer streets for all. Through its Toto Mass programme, the organisation runs monthly child-friendly rides and advocates for better cycling infrastructure, safer playgrounds, and inclusive mobility policies.

The latest edition of Toto Mass Kids’ Day Out underscored one clear message: when families come together to prioritise safety, wellness, and financial confidence, children gain the tools and freedom to thrive.
