Let’s Raise a Toast to Our Real Ones: A Galentine’s Day Guide

Like every Kenyan girl lately, we are going through a lot. Between adulting, the ever-rising cost of skincare, and the Nairobi dating scene, we can all agree—we need an escape. A place where we can let our hair down, take off our wigs, and just relax. And there’s no safer space than with our girls.

There’s something special about having a dependable community of girlfriends—women who, despite different backgrounds, have become family. A sisterhood that supports, affirms, inspires, and always has your back.

We draw so much from our female friendships, which is why we need to nurture them constantly. And what better time to do that than on Galentine’s Day? Here are some fun ways to celebrate your Real Ones on this special day.

1. Brunch Date

Treat yourselves to a delicious brunch at that cute café you’ve all been eyeing. You work too hard not to take a moment to enjoy the finer things in life. So, dress up, show up, and while you’re at it, take lots of photos for the ‘gram. Let your content creator friend capture the best angles, and remind each other, “We need to do this more often.”

2. Girls’ Night Out

Not into brunch but love a good turn-up? Plan a girls’ night out. Start with dinner, then head to the club, or make it a full glam session at one of your places before stepping out. Help each other with makeup, hype each other up, and hit the town together. Just remember to have fun and stay safe.

3. Girls’ Night In

On a budget? Or just more of a homebody? No worries—you can still have fun with a pajama party. Pick a host, go all out with matching PJs (or not), and plan a fun-filled night.

If your crew is anything like mine, you’ll divide the duties—someone handles dinner (or orders takeout), another picks the movie, and someone else sorts the drinks. Or better yet, do everything together. Spend the night playing board games, having deep girl talk, or turning the sleepover into an impromptu intervention for whoever needs it.

4. Connect with Nature

For the outdoor girlies, take a quick escape from the city to Karura Forest, Ngong Hills, or any nearby nature trail. These spots offer budget-friendly activities like hiking, bike riding, and zip-lining, giving you a chance to bond with both your girls and nature. Pack a picnic basket, find a scenic spot, and just chill.

5. Gifting

Who says you have to wait for birthdays to surprise your besties? Swap wish lists and exchange gifts this Galentine’s Day.

Since your girls don’t expect you to break the bank (we’re barely out of Njaanuary), small thoughtful gifts will do. Maybe that mouse Cindy keeps forgetting to buy for her laptop, or a ticket to a play Marion would love. It’s the little things that show you love and value your friendship.
