The government’s affordable housing initiative has reached a major milestone, with the first beneficiaries set to receive their keys in a historic ceremony tomorrow. Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed that President William Ruto will personally hand over 1,080 units at the newly upgraded Mukuru Estate a symbolic transformation from its former identity as Mukuru Slums.
A total of 13,248 housing units have been completed under the program, with 970 already verified for ownership. The handover event, scheduled for 8 a.m. at Riadha Village, will see low-income Kenyans secure homes at groundbreaking prices—with social housing units starting at just KSh 3,900 per month, affordable units at KSh 7,250, and middle-class options at KSh 21,160.
“This demonstrates that the government’s reforms are delivering results,” Mwaura stated. “Our pledge to build 200,000 houses annually for five years providing shelter for over 5 million Kenyans is now taking tangible shape.”

The spokesperson also highlighted ongoing efforts to streamline government procurement through e-procurement systems, a move expected to save the country between KSh 250 billion and KSh 300 billion annually by reducing corruption in manual tender processes.
Mwaura acknowledged resistance to these changes but affirmed the administration’s commitment: “While some are pushing back against reforms, we remain steadfast in eliminating graft, particularly in projects designed to improve citizens’ lives.”

The Mukuru handover marks a turning point in Kenya’s housing landscape, with officials encouraging the public to witness this significant step in urban transformation. “Mukuru’s evolution from slum to estate exemplifies how public investment should directly benefit Kenyans,” Mwaura emphasized.
