Bungoma, Kenya – 28th May 2026 – Hundreds of young people in Bungoma County are transforming their lives through digital jobs, online opportunities, and skills training under the Government’s Jitume Digital Enablement Programme.

The initiative is helping youth gain practical digital skills, access the internet, and secure income-generating opportunities as Kenya strengthens efforts to build a competitive digital economy.

Implemented by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy through the Technopolis Development Authority, formerly Konza Technopolis Development Authority, the programme continues to expand access to digital infrastructure and online work through Jitume Digital Hubs across the country.

In Bungoma County, nine Jitume Digital Hubs have already been established in Kabuchai, Webuye West, Kimilili, Chemoge, Tongaren, and Kanduyi. Through these centres, young people are receiving practical digital training, mentorship, access to digital devices, and internet connectivity, enabling them to compete for opportunities in the growing online marketplace.

For many beneficiaries, the programme has become a life-changing opportunity.

Youth attached to the Bungoma National Polytechnic Jitume Hub shared testimonies of how the initiative has improved their livelihoods by increasing employability, exposing them to digital work, and helping them earn income through online platforms.

Speaking during an engagement session with youth at the institution, Ruth Muriithi, Manager for Knowledge Economy and Innovation, said the programme is helping position Kenya as a key player in the global digital economy while ensuring young people are not left behind.

She noted that Kenya remains among Africa’s leading countries in internet connectivity and digital innovation, adding that initiatives such as Jitume are opening doors for young people at the grassroots level.

“Jitume is critical in ensuring that young people can access digital skills, online jobs, and technology infrastructure that empower them economically and position Kenya competitively in the global digital economy,” she said.

At the same time, the programme forms part of Kenya’s wider digital transformation agenda under the National Digital Masterplan 2022–2032, which aims to position the country as a leading digital economy in Africa.

The Government is also targeting the creation of one million digital jobs by 2032, with Jitume expected to play a major role in achieving that goal.

Since its launch in 2023, nearly 350 Jitume Digital Hubs have been established across the country. The Government plans to roll out 1,450 hubs across all wards in the 47 counties to increase access to digital opportunities.

So far, more than 240,000 young people have received digital skills training through the programme, while close to 92,000 digital job opportunities have been linked to Kenyan youth.

Beyond training, the initiative is helping bridge the digital divide, particularly in underserved communities, by expanding access to technology and equipping young people with market-driven skills needed in an economy increasingly shaped by Artificial Intelligence, automation, and online work platforms.

The hubs also serve as centres for digital empowerment by offering access to computers, mentorship, innovation spaces, reliable internet, and opportunities for online work.

Meanwhile, the Government is constructing Jitume Centres of Excellence in every county to provide expanded support for innovators, creatives, and digital workers.

The Jitume Digital Enablement Programme is jointly implemented by the Technopolis Development Authority, the Communications Authority of Kenya, and the ICT Authority under the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, in partnership with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund.

As Kenya continues embracing digital transformation, the programme is increasingly becoming a lifeline for many young people seeking meaningful employment and sustainable livelihoods in the digital space.
