Nyamira County, Kenya – 8th August, 2025 – A total of 160 young people have graduated from a transformative four-week digital skills training program in Nyamira County, Kenya. Delivered through Huawei’s innovative solar-powered DigiTruck, the program equipped participants with essential digital competencies to thrive in today’s technology-driven world.

The DigiTruck—a mobile, solar-powered digital classroom—offered practical, hands-on training in key areas such as basic computer skills, online job searching, CV writing, and digital marketing. The initiative was a joint effort between Huawei Kenya, the Nyamira County Government, and other partners, with strong advocacy from Nominated Member of Parliament, Hon. Irene Mayaka.

The program equipped participants with essential digital competencies including basic computer use, internet navigation, digital marketing, online safety, and entrepreneurship. The goal: to bridge the rural-urban digital divide and empower youth with skills for the modern economy.

According to the World Bank’s 2023 report on digital inclusion in Kenya, only 38% of rural youth possess basic ICT skills, compared to 67% in urban areas, highlighting a significant literacy gap that limits equitable access to digital opportunities. Additionally, the World Bank’s Future Workforce report emphasizes that over 60% of jobs in Kenya by 2030 will require advanced digital and cognitive skills, underscoring the urgent need to prepare youth for a rapidly evolving labor market.

“Having passionately championed the arrival of this program in Nyamira, I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said Hon. Irene Mayaka. “This initiative wasn’t just about learning technology—it was about expanding horizons, building self-confidence, and opening up new opportunities for our youth to innovate and succeed. My heartfelt thanks to Huawei Kenya, the national and local government, our trainers, and most importantly, the young people who committed themselves to this journey.”

Since its launch, Huawei’s DigiTruck has played a crucial role in narrowing the digital divide in rural Kenya, having trained over 4,600 youth across 28 counties. The success of the program in Nyamira has reinforced plans to expand its reach throughout the remainder of the year.

“We are thrilled to see the tangible impact the DigiTruck is having on youth empowerment across Kenya,” said Winnie Chepkonga, CSR Activities Coordinator at Huawei Kenya. “Huawei remains committed to supporting initiatives that foster digital inclusion and skills development.”

In today’s fast-paced digital world, having foundational digital skills is no longer optional—it’s essential. These skills enhance employability, unlock access to online income-generating opportunities, and empower individuals to actively participate in the digital economy. Whether through freelancing, e-commerce, or entrepreneurship, digital literacy is opening doors to a more connected and prosperous future.

The graduation ceremony marked more than the end of a training program—it celebrated the resilience, curiosity, and determination of Nyamira’s youth. As the DigiTruck continues its nationwide journey, it remains a beacon of opportunity, empowering Kenya’s next generation to lead and succeed in the digital era.

The Nyamira graduation follows recent DigiTruck programs held in Kisii, Baringo, Migori, and Homa Bay Counties, bringing the total number of youth trained in 2025 to over 900. In May 2025, 180 youth graduated from Kabimoi Vocational Training Centre in Baringo County. In Migori, 210 youth (95 women, 115 men) completed training at Uriri Vocational Training Centre, while Homa Bay recorded 290 graduates (143 women, 147 men) at Oriwo Boys High School.

The graduation marks a new chapter for the trainees, with certificates recognizing their skills and empowering them to explore digital entrepreneurship. The program also includes an innovation competition, encouraging participants to develop practical solutions for community challenges, fostering creativity and problem-solving.

Since its launch in 2019, the Huawei DigiTruck has trained over 9,000 youth across 39 counties—demonstrating a sustained commitment to building Kenya’s digital future, one county at a time.
