In the world of Kenyan football, few stories resonate with the themes of passion, resilience, and homecoming as powerfully as that of Paul Okatwa Odhiambo. From the dusty pitches of Butere to the hallowed turf of international stadiums, and now back to the school grounds where his dream began, Okatwa’s life is a testament to the beautiful game’s transformative power.
Born in 1984 in Butere Constituency, Kakamega County, Okatwa’s rise was forged from humble beginnings. His exceptional talent and unyielding determination propelled him from local competitions to the pinnacle of Kenyan football, eventually earning him the coveted Harambee Stars jersey. As a striking midfielder renowned for his sharp vision, creativity, and commanding presence, he secured his place among the nation’s most celebrated footballers.
His illustrious playing career saw him become a familiar face at virtually every top-tier club in the country. He left an indelible mark on giants like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, as well as formidable sides including Tusker, Ushuru FC, and Sofapaka. This extensive experience on the pitch provided the perfect foundation for what was to come next—a seamless transition into a life of leadership from the sidelines.
When the time came to hang up his boots, Okatwa channeled his deep understanding of the game into coaching. He began his managerial career with Kangemi All Stars, where he immediately demonstrated his tactical acumen by helping the team avoid relegation from Division One. In the following season, he surpassed all expectations by guiding them to an impressive second-place finish, a clear signal that a new coaching talent had arrived.
His rising reputation soon led him to Nairobi United, a club languishing in 14th place after a dismal start to the season. With unwavering determination and strategic insight, Okatwa orchestrated a stunning turnaround. He not only stabilized the team but masterminded their promotion into the prestigious National Super League, where he left them in a remarkable 3rd place in their debut campaign.

After further honing his skills as the head coach of Nairobi United and later as an assistant coach at Kakamega Homeboyz where he famously helped lift the team from the bottom of the league to a 3rd-place finish Okatwa has now accomplished something truly special. He has returned to his roots, accepting the role of Head Coach at Exodus Butere Boys High School, his very own alma mater.
Under his guidance, the school team has undergone a dramatic revival, rediscovering its footballing pride and securing a coveted spot at the ongoing Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Association (FEASSA) Games. For the young players at Butere Boys, Okatwa is far more than a coach; he is a mentor, a role model, and living proof that the dreams they nurture on their own dusty fields can indeed blossom into national and regional triumphs.
As the team battles for glory on the East African stage, Paul Okatwa Odhiambo’s journey truly feels complete. He is no longer just a former star shaping games; he is now shaping futures, instilling in the next generation the same passion and resilience that carried him from Butere to national stardom and back again.
