Ndindi Nyoro Breaks Ranks With UDA, Joins Opposition Ahead of 2027 Elections

NAIROBI, Kenya — August 17, 2026 — Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has broken ranks with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and joined the opposition, marking a major shift in his political career ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Nyoro announced on Monday that he had joined the People’s Party of Kenya (PPK), saying the decision followed nearly a year of consultations with leaders across the political divide.

“I want to be very direct. I, Ndindi Nyoro, from today, I have joined a party called People’s Party of Kenya,” Nyoro said during a media briefing in Nairobi.

The lawmaker, who was previously a prominent supporter of President William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration, said he had taken time to reflect on his political future and what he considered to be in the best interests of Kenyans.

“I have been carrying a heavy burden. I have been thinking and praying that in whatever direction I take, politically speaking, the people of Kenya must be the great consideration that I have,” he said.

Nyoro revealed that he had held discussions with several opposition figures as he weighed his next political move. Among those he named were former Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, former Justice Minister Martha Karua, Siaya Governor James Orengo, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

He also said he had consulted former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i for an extended period.

According to Nyoro, his decision to join the opposition is part of a broader effort to provide an alternative political direction ahead of the 2027 elections, which are less than a year away.

The Kiharu MP said he would work with opposition leaders to challenge President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration at the ballot.

As part of his new political strategy, Nyoro announced plans to embark on a countrywide tour, beginning with regions that have traditionally been considered President Ruto’s political strongholds.

He singled out Uasin Gishu, Kericho and Nandi as some of his first destinations, saying the tours would allow him to engage directly with voters and explain the reasons behind his political break with the government he strongly supported in the 2022 elections.

Nyoro also opened the doors of the PPK to members of other opposition parties, saying they would be welcome to participate in the party’s rallies as political groups seek to build a broader coalition ahead of the 2027 polls.

Beyond the presidential contest, the MP said he would focus on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures by supporting candidates seeking elective positions at the ward and constituency levels.

“People contesting for MCAs and MPs under the People’s Party, I will be offering them advice so that as we fight above there, we also have credible leaders in the wards and constituencies,” he said.

Nyoro’s move adds to growing political realignments in Kenya as politicians and parties position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His departure from UDA is particularly significant given his previous role as one of the administration’s influential political voices and his strong support for President Ruto during the 2022 election campaign.

The move is expected to reshape political dynamics in the Mt Kenya region and beyond as opposition parties seek to consolidate support ahead of the next presidential and parliamentary elections.
