CFK Africa to Celebrate Slum Heroes Changing Lives in Kibera.

CFK Africa is set to honor outstanding individuals and groups driving change in Kenya’s informal settlements during its annual community awards on August 9 in Kibera, Nairobi.

The highly anticipated event, one of the few of its kind in Kenya’s slum communities, will shine a spotlight on unsung heroes who embody leadership, resilience, and innovation despite facing tough challenges. Among the top honorees will be Kibera Soccer Women FC, fresh off their historic win in the FKF Women’s Cup Finals.

“We’re proud to celebrate community champions who, with limited resources, are improving lives every day,” said Jeffrey Okoro, Executive Director of CFK Africa. “This is a chance to recognize their incredible contributions.”

The awards reflect CFK Africa’s commitment to community-led development. All nominations and selections are made by local residents, ensuring that the voices of the community remain central. The honorees represent the nonprofit’s core values—impact, leadership, innovation, inclusivity, sustainability, resilience, and community coaching.

This year’s event carries special significance, as it honors the Kibera Soccer Women FC for bringing national pride home to Kenya’s largest informal settlement. Their victory not only highlighted raw talent from the slums but also inspired many young girls in the area. The players, who double as mentors in CFK Africa’s girls’ empowerment program, are seen as role models and proof that dreams are valid no matter where you come from.

“True development starts from within the community,” added Okoro. “In today’s fast-changing world, we must continue to support grassroots solutions that unlock hope and innovation where it matters most.”

The event promises music, celebration, and a powerful reminder that real change starts at the community level with people who care and act.
