Nairobi, September 4, 2025 – Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has defended her decision to accept an appointment as Vice Chairperson of the panel of experts on compensation for victims of protests and riots.

Her appointment was made by President William Ruto through a gazette notice issued on August 26, 2025. However, it quickly sparked public debate, with some Kenyans questioning whether her new role could compromise her fight for justice amid concerns over human rights violations during demonstrations.

Speaking during the panel’s swearing-in on Thursday, Odhiambo firmly rejected claims that she had betrayed the public.

“As I take up this responsibility, let it be known that I have in no way betrayed your trust,” she said. “Access to criminal justice remains critical to me in our quest to promote and protect the rule of law as an essential element in the enjoyment of fundamental human rights and freedoms.”

She assured victims and their families that their pain would not be forgotten, promising that their sacrifices would not be in vain. Odhiambo further pledged to keep Kenyans informed of the panel’s progress and emphasized that her work would not undermine the democratic gains the country has made.

Her latest move comes a year after she declined an appointment to a presidential task force on public debt, which the LSK opposed as unconstitutional. This time, she stressed that her decision is rooted in a commitment to justice and transparency.
