The Kenya School of TVET (KSTVET) and Huawei Technologies Kenya have completed the second phase of the national Huawei Train the Trainer program. The initiative aims to boost digital skills and strengthen ICT training across Kenya’s TVET institutions.

The event took place in Nairobi on Monday and was officiated by Dr. Joseph Kanyi, the Director of TVET, who represented the Principal Secretary. A total of 65 lecturers finished the intensive 15-day course that focused on Artificial Intelligence, Data Communication, Cloud and Cybersecurity.

The program equipped trainers with skills in network fundamentals, IP routing and switching, WLAN technologies and network security. They also gained hands-on experience in data communication and AI concepts, including machine learning workflows, deep learning and real-world AI applications. Huawei also issued certification exam vouchers to all trainers.

Dr. Kanyi praised the program for aligning with the government’s Dual TVET model. He urged trainers to share the skills with their institutions and communities. He said the program prepares Kenya’s workforce for a fast-changing digital future and strengthens national competitiveness.

The State Department for TVET and Huawei have worked together since 2021, leading to the establishment of 11 Huawei ICT Academies across the country. In May 2024, KSTVET was recognized in China as the Academy Support Centre for all TVET ICT academies in Kenya.

Under the new phase, seven trainers will join the Academy Support Centre, while 55 will run Huawei ICT Academies in their institutions. The partnership grew further in May 2025 through an MoU that aims to expand the program to 150 TVET institutions and reach 10,000 beneficiaries in three years.

Huawei Public Affairs Director Yuta Leng applauded the collaboration and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Kenya’s digital talent. He said Huawei remains committed to empowering lecturers with skills that match global industry needs. He also encouraged more institutions to join the Huawei ICT Competition for global exposure.

KSTVET said the program boosts institutional capacity and enhances the quality of ICT training. The institution noted that the trainers will play a central role in driving digital transformation within TVET colleges.

The State Department directed all trainers to cascade the skills to students and communities. It also urged them to manage ICT Academies well, keep accurate trainee records and submit regular progress reports.

Dr. Kanyi said the government plans to deepen the partnership and will sign a new MoU to strengthen ICT talent development.

The Huawei Train the Trainer program prepares TVET lecturers to deliver industry-aligned digital skills and supports Kenya’s journey toward a competitive digital economy.
