Nairobi – March 4, 2026 – Kenya will host the 2026 FIFA Women’s Series in a historic first that signals rising global confidence in the country’s ability to stage top-tier football events.

The announcement by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya places Kenya on the global football stage as it prepares to welcome teams, officials and fans for the international showpiece organized by FIFA.

Matches will be played at Nyayo National Stadium on April 11 and 15, 2026, with the Harambee Starlets set to face India, Australia and Malawi. The fixtures are expected to spotlight emerging talent and boost the profile of women’s football in the region.

Mvurya said the selection reflects Kenya’s steady investment in sports infrastructure and reforms aimed at strengthening governance in the sector. He noted that the country is ready to deliver a successful tournament while showcasing its culture and hospitality.

“This is a strong vote of confidence in Kenya’s ability to organize and deliver world-class sporting events,” he said.

Kenya’s hosting rights add to a growing list of international events held in the country, including the African Nations Championship, the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, the Magical Kenya Open and the WRC Safari Rally. The Kip Keino Classic has also attracted global attention, reinforcing Kenya’s status as a reliable destination for international sport.

At the same time, Kenya has been selected among 48 teams to take part in the FIFA International Friendly Series. The opportunity is expected to increase exposure for local players and strengthen competitiveness at both club and national levels.

While Nairobi prepares to host the women’s matches, the Harambee Stars are already in action in Kigali. The team is set to face Estonia on March 27 before meeting either Rwanda or Grenada in a final fixture on March 30.

The matches are seen as key in building team cohesion and match fitness ahead of upcoming continental competitons, including the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.

Government officials say the milestone is the result of deliberate efforts to transform the sports sector. Under President William Ruto, the country has prioritised infrastructure development, talent growth and institutional reforms.

Projects such as the Talanta Sports Complex and upgrades at Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums are aimed at meeting international standards. At the grassroots level, academies and school competitions are helping identify and nurture talent across the country.

The government has also strengthened partnerships with the private sector to expand investment in sports and position it as a driver of economic growth.

Reforms, including the Sports Bill 2026 and a new stadium management framework, are expected to improve accountability and attract more global events. Authorities say these measures have played a role in securing FIFA’s trust.

Kenya is also using the Women’s Series as part of its build-up to AFCON 2027, which it will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania. The tournament will provide a chance to test infrastructure and operational readiness ahead of the continental competition.

Mvurya reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering a successful AFCON, adding that discussions are ongoing to secure the necessary funding.

He also praised the Football Kenya Federation for reforms that have improved governance and restored confidence in the sport.

As preparations gather pace, Kenyans have been urged to turn out in large numbers to support the national teams. Officials say strong fan support will inspire players and showcase the country’s unity and passion for football.

For the Harambee Starlets, the tournament offers a rare chance to compete against diverse international opponents on home soil. For the Harambee Stars, the matches in Kigali present an opportunity to rebuild momentum.

The Women’s Series now stands as a defining moment for Kenya’s sporting future, with expectations high that it will open the door for more global tournaments and elevate the country’s position in international football.
