Nairobi, December 8, 2025… The Kibugu brothers lit up the Sigona Golf Club on Sunday as they staged a thrilling duel in the seventh leg of the PGK Equator Tour. The battle went down to the wire, and the younger brother, Njoroge Kibugu, delivered a brilliant finish to claim his first PGK Equator Tour title.
Njoroge fired a superb 9-under-par 279 over four rounds to seal the win. He edged out his elder brother, the Safaricom-sponsored Mutahi Kibugu, by a single stroke. Mutahi posted an impressive 8-under-par 280 to tie for second with fellow Safaricom teammate Samuel Njoroge.
“It was amazing playing against my brother. I felt tense when he overtook me around hole nine, but I pulled myself together and fought back. Our family was so happy, cheering and pushing us on. For them, the winner didn’t matter. What mattered was the great golf and the positive pressure we created,” said Njoroge.
Mutahi praised the intense showdown and the high-quality golf on display. “This has been one of the most competitive tournaments so far. Going head-to-head with Njoroge was incredible. Everyone brought their A-game. The fairways were great, and I’m pleased with my score. As Team Safaricom, this is a fantastic result. We still lead the overall standings, and with two legs left, we aim to finish at the top,” he said.
Snow Greg took fourth place with a 5-under-par 283. Edwin Mudanyi followed with a 4-under-par 284. The rest of the top ten featured Dismas Indiza on 287, David Wahu on 290, and Mohit Meiratta, CJ Wangai, and Kennedy Abuto, who posted 291, 291, and 293, respectively.
With only two legs remaining, Team Safaricom continues to dominate the standings. The team of Mutahi Kibugu, Samuel Njoroge, Mohit Meiratta, and Mathew Wahome sits comfortably in first place with 7,575 points. Kenya Airways Team holds second with 5,635 points, while Visa Team follows in third with 4,745 points. John Walker Team sits fourth on 4,460 points, NCBA Team takes fifth, and Britam Team closes the top six with 1,810 points.
The race is heating up as players chase crucial qualification points for the 2025 Magical Kenya Open and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Safaricom has invested KES 3 million over three years to support the four professional golfers, boosting Kenya’s hopes for international success.
