Tatu City, Kenya, 15 August 2025 — New Zealand Olympians Hamish Legarth (Paris 2024, Sprint Kayaking) and Nicole Shields (Paris 2024 – Silver, Track Cycling) brought their 4,500km cycling journey across East Africa to Tatu City, championing World Bicycle Relief’s mission to improve access to education, healthcare, and livelihoods through bicycles.
Joined by Nova Pioneer School students and Tatu City staff, the athletes took part in a spirited community ride along the city’s scenic nature trails and cyclist-friendly routes. Their Tatu City stop followed visits to Kisumu, where they toured World Bicycle Relief’s distribution hub, and Iten, the world-famous training base for Kenya’s elite runners. From here, their journey continues across the region, carrying a message of mobility equity powered by the humble bicycle.
“Tatu City is designed for people, not just buildings,” said Linda Nyaseda, Head of City Management at Tatu City. “Our pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly infrastructure ensures safety and harmony between vehicles and non-motorized users. We are proud to host Hamish and Nicole, whose mission reflects our vision of healthy, connected communities.”
For Hamish, the goal is simple but urgent. “The more bicycles we can deliver, the more lives we can impact,” he said. Nicole echoed the sentiment: “We’re not just cycling for adventure we’re cycling for access and equity. A bicycle in the hands of a student or healthcare worker can be life-changing.”
