The Kenyan government has reassured the public that only illegal and non-compliant children’s homes will face closure, as part of a renewed effort to protect vulnerable children.

No Blanket Ban – Only Illegal Homes Targeted.

Contrary to fears of a mass shutdown, Mutua clarified that well-run, registered children’s homes will remain operational.

“Just yesterday, I approved licenses for 25 compliant children’s homes,” he said. “We are not shutting down facilities that follow the law. However, illegal homes operating as fronts for child trafficking or abuse must be closed immediately.”

The new department, headed by Principal Secretary, Caren Ageng’o will focus exclusively on child protection, ensuring faster legal processes and better rescue centers.

Faster Justice for Children.

PS Ageng’o pledged to work closely with the judiciary to speed up child-related court cases.

“We will strengthen child protection systems and ensure no case is delayed,” she said. “New child-friendly rescue centers will also be set up in police stations and counties.”

The move comes as Kenya faces rising cases of missing children, many linked to abuse, abduction, or neglect.
