Isaac Mwaura Defends Kenya’s Tourism, Warns Against Remarks That Could Damage Country’s Image

NAIROBI, Kenya — Government Spokesperson Hon. Isaac Mwaura has defended Kenya’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination, cautioning leaders against making statements that could discourage tourists and investors from visiting the country.
Speaking during the Government’s weekly press briefing in Nairobi on Monday, Mwaura said Kenya remains peaceful, secure and fully open for business. He argued that public remarks portraying the country as unsafe risk undermining one of the country’s most important economic sectors and could negatively affect the livelihoods of thousands of Kenyans who rely on tourism.
He stressed that the tourism industry supports a broad value chain, including hotels, tour operators, transport providers, restaurants, artisans and small businesses. For that reason, he urged political leaders to exercise restraint when commenting on issues that could influence the country’s international reputation.
“Leaders have a responsibility to safeguard the national interest. Statements that create unnecessary fear among visitors or investors can have far-reaching economic consequences,” Mwaura said.
At the same time, he pointed to the continued growth of the tourism sector as evidence of growing confidence in Kenya. He noted that international tourist arrivals have increased from 1.48 million to 2.2 million visitors, while domestic tourism has reached 5.2 million travellers, describing the figures as a clear indication that Kenya remains one of Africa’s preferred travel destinations.
Additionally, Mwaura said the government will continue strengthening security measures and promoting Kenya’s rich tourism products to sustain the sector’s upward trajectory. He added that preserving the country’s positive image is a collective responsibility that should rise above political differences.
His remarks followed recent comments by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who raised concerns over security and advised foreign visitors to exercise caution when travelling to Kenya. Mwaura dismissed the claims, maintaining that the government remains committed to ensuring the safety of both citizens and international visitors.
The Government Spokesperson also responded to remarks by American content creator Skai Jackson, accusing her of presenting Kenya through outdated stereotypes that do not reflect the country’s current reality. He said Kenya has made remarkable progress across key sectors, including education, agriculture, diplomacy, sports and economic development, and deserves to be recognised for its achievements rather than outdated narratives.
Furthermore, Mwaura commended Kenyans for defending the country’s image on global platforms, saying their collective response demonstrated patriotism and national pride. He encouraged citizens to continue showcasing Kenya’s strengths, noting that a positive national image plays a vital role in attracting tourists, investment and new economic opportunities.
