In a fiery press conference, Safina Party leader Jimi Wanjigi launched a scathing attack on President William Ruto, holding him responsible for the recent wave of abductions and killings that have gripped the nation. Speaking in Nairobi alongside his lawyer Willis Otieno and other political figures, Wanjigi urged Kenyans to demand accountability and justice for the victims of these abductions.
Wanjigi did not mince words as he accused the Ruto administration of orchestrating a campaign of fear through enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings. “We are standing on the edge of an abyss, moving rapidly in the wrong direction,” Wanjigi warned. “We must all wake up and demand the truth, accountability, and justice for these heinous acts.”
The businessman-turned-politician alleged that the abductions were not isolated incidents but rather a deliberate strategy by the government to instill fear among citizens. He painted a grim picture of a nation where young people are targeted, kidnapped, and, in some cases, killed. “For the avoidance of doubt, the president is solely responsible for these abductions, enforced disappearances, and the murder of our youth,” Wanjigi claimed.

In his remarks, Wanjigi reminded the Inspector General of Police of his constitutional duty to operate independently and respect human rights. He criticized the police force for what he sees as its complicity in the government’s campaign of terror. “The Constitution mandates the police to protect citizens, not to terrorize them,” Wanjigi asserted.
Wanjigi also took a swipe at President Ruto’s recent promises to crack down on abductions and disappearances, dismissing them as empty words. He accused the President of mocking the pain and suffering of victims’ families. “President Ruto is hypocritically mocking, laughing, and demeaning those whose loved ones have been abducted. His promises are a slap in the face to the families of the missing,” Wanjigi said.
The Safina Party leader did not shy away from highlighting his own experiences, recounting how some of his close associates who visited him after his recent detention have since gone missing. Among those unaccounted for are Bob Njage and the Longman Twins, who were reportedly abducted by police three weeks ago. Wanjigi expressed solidarity with the families of the missing, pledging to continue fighting for justice.
Joshua Okayo, a student leader at the Kenya School of Law, joined Wanjigi at the press conference, sharing his own chilling tale of abduction. Okayo recounted being kidnapped on June 26 and released two days later near the Maragwa River in Murang’a. “Had it not been for public pressure, I might have been found dead,” Okayo said, urging Kenyans to continue advocating for the release of those still missing.
Wanjigi emphasized that the issue of abductions and killings transcends politics, calling it a moral crisis that affects every Kenyan. He called on President Ruto to honor the oath of office he took, which commits him to uphold the Constitution and serve the country with justice. “Regrettably, today it can be confirmed that President Ruto has not only violated the Constitution but also contravened his oath of office,” Wanjigi stated.
The Safina Party leader’s impassioned plea for accountability comes at a time of heightened political tension in Kenya, with anti-government protests gaining momentum. Wanjigi’s allegations are likely to add fuel to the fire, further straining relations between the government and opposition forces.
As the country grapples with these troubling accusations, the call for justice and transparency from leaders like Wanjigi resonates with a growing number of Kenyans demanding answers. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the government will heed these calls or if the cycle of fear and repression will continue unabated.
