Nairobi, Kenya – Nairobi women leaders from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) have called on longtime chairlady Catherine Okoth to step down, saying her two-decade rule has stifled growth in the party’s women wing.
The women argue that it is time for fresh leadership, rallying behind Rosemary Okuta as their choice for the ODM Nairobi chairlady seat.
They accused Okoth of overstaying in office and failing to champion the interests of women in the party. Many members said the branch needs new energy and ideas to strengthen ODM ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We respect Mama Catherine, but twenty years is too long. We want change, and our change is Rosemary Okuta,” said one of the leaders during a meeting in Nairobi.
The endorsement marks a major political shift within ODM’s Nairobi branch, where calls for generational change are growing louder.
Okuta, who has been actively mobilizing women across the county, thanked the members for their support and promised to work towards inclusivity, empowerment, and unity among ODM women.
“I am humbled by this endorsement. Together, we will rebuild confidence in our women leadership and ensure ODM women have a strong voice,” she said.
The demand now puts pressure on Okoth, who has been at the center of criticism from party members and is facing mounting calls to relinquish the seat.
