Government Spokesperson Sen. (Dr.) Isaac Mwaura, CBS, unveiled groundbreaking achievements and ambitious plans under Kenya’s Affordable Housing Program and Taifa Care initiative. These programs are driving a wave of positive change, improving lives, and boosting the economy.

“The government is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring every Kenyan has access to dignified housing and quality healthcare,” declared Dr. Mwaura. “These programs are not just statistics; they are stories of real transformation for families and communities.”

Under the Affordable Housing Program, over 124,000 housing units are at various stages of construction, with 4,888 units now available for sale through the Boma Yangu platform. More than 550,000 Kenyans have registered for home ownership, marking a significant step toward addressing housing shortages. “This initiative is creating homes, but it’s also creating opportunities,” he emphasized, noting that the program has already generated 200,000 direct jobs, with plans to achieve 1 million jobs in the next four years.

The program also supports the recognition of skilled workers. Dr. Mwaura revealed that 213 artisans have been certified under the government’s artisan development program, enhancing their employability and potential for higher wages. John Otieno, a mason from Kisumu, is one such beneficiary. “John’s story is inspiring; his earnings have enabled him to support his siblings’ education and empower his wife to start a small business,” Dr. Mwaura highlighted.

In healthcare, the rollout of Taifa Care under the Social Health Authority is revolutionizing access to medical services. Within two months, over 16.5 million Kenyans have been registered under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). Community Health Promoters (CHPs) have registered 7.8 million households and screened millions for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, referring thousands for timely medical care.

“Healthcare should never be a privilege. Taifa Care ensures every Kenyan can access critical services,” said Dr. Mwaura. The initiative covers up to 180 days of critical care per household annually at empaneled facilities. Costs start at KES 3,360 per day, making critical services more affordable for families.

Dr. Mwaura highlighted Amina Hassan’s story to emphasize the program’s human impact. “For the first time, Amina accessed life-saving surgery without worrying about cost,” he stated. “This reflects equity and inclusivity in healthcare,” he added.

The government has also resolved healthcare professionals’ grievances through a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. Intern doctors’ monthly salaries increased from KES 70,000 to KES 206,000, with salary arrears cleared. “This agreement shows our commitment to supporting medical workers,” Dr. Mwaura noted. “It ensures they can focus on delivering quality care,” he concluded.
