PM Party Says Olkalau By-Election Marks Shift in Kenya’s Political Landscape

NAIROBI, Kenya — The People’s Movement (PM Party) has described the Olkalau parliamentary by-election as a defining moment in Kenya’s evolving political landscape, arguing that the contest underscored the growing influence of young voters and emerging political movements ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement released after the by-election, the party thanked the people of Olkalau Constituency for participating in the democratic process and congratulated the declared winner. It also expressed appreciation to voters who supported its candidate, Timothy Kamau, the youngest contestant in the race and a first-time parliamentary aspirant representing the newly registered party.
According to PM Party, Kamau’s performance demonstrated that young leaders can mount competitive campaigns despite limited political experience and resources. The party noted that it had received its registration certificate barely three months before the by-election, describing the contest as its first major electoral test.
The party said the outcome reflected a growing political awakening among Kenyans, with more voters, particularly the youth, embracing leadership based on ideas, accountability and integrity rather than established political traditions.
“Our supporters have shown that a new political consciousness is emerging across the country,” the statement said, adding that although the party did not win the seat, it had laid the foundation for a broader national movement.
PM Party, however, expressed concern over the conduct of the campaign, condemning all forms of electoral violence, intimidation and any attempts to interfere with the free expression of voters. It also cited reports and allegations of voter bribery and the misuse of state influence during the campaign period, maintaining that elections should be decided through public trust and credible leadership rather than inducements or abuse of power.
The party urged the relevant institutions to investigate any credible allegations and take appropriate action to safeguard public confidence in Kenya’s electoral process.
Looking beyond the by-election, PM Party said the Olkalau contest revealed significant political trends, including the growing influence of the youth vote, the emergence of new political formations as viable competitors and an increasing public demand for accountable leadership.
It said the experience would guide its preparations for the 2027 General Election through the expansion of grassroots structures, recruitment of more young leaders and strengthening of its national presence.
The party further called on young Kenyans to remain actively involved in the country’s democratic processes, saying their participation would play a critical role in shaping the nation’s future.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful politics, democratic competition, economic transformation and accountable leadership, PM Party said the Olkalau by-election marked the beginning of what it believes will be a broader movement for political renewal across the country as Kenya heads towards the 2027 General Election.
