Zoomlion Kenya Launches Waste Management Farm at Dandora School to Promote Environmental Conservation

NAIROBI, Kenya — Zoomlion Kenya Waste Services Limited has launched an eco-friendly waste management farm at Wangu Comprehensive Primary and Junior School in Dandora, Nairobi, in a move aimed at promoting recycling, sustainable agriculture and environmental education among learners and the surrounding community.

The initiative, launched on Friday, October 9, 2026, ahead of Mazingira Day celebrations, seeks to demonstrate how organic waste can be converted into nutrient-rich compost for farming instead of being discarded at already strained waste disposal sites.

Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris joined the company’s team during the launch, which brought together school leadership and other stakeholders to promote practical solutions to waste management and environmental conservation.

Those present included Kenneth Kumi, Zoomlion Kenya’s Head of Operations for Nairobi, Wangu Comprehensive School Headteacher Wachira Kagunya and Julius Were, a local leader.

The waste management farm is designed to demonstrate how organic waste can be put to productive use, supporting sustainable food production while reducing the amount of waste sent to disposal sites. The approach also promotes a circular economy in which discarded materials are recovered and reused rather than treated as waste.

Beyond waste recovery, Zoomlion Kenya intends the farm to serve as a practical learning and training hub for schoolchildren, young people and women-led enterprises. Through hands-on activities in composting, environmental education and sustainable food production, the initiative seeks to equip participants with green skills and encourage environmental entrepreneurship.

The project also highlights the role schools can play in promoting responsible waste disposal and conservation. By introducing environmental action within the school community, learners can gain practical experience in recycling, composting, tree planting and protecting their surroundings.

The launch formed part of activities to mark Mazingira Day 2026, with a school tour, corporate social responsibility engagement and environmental awareness activities planned as part of the initiative.

Zoomlion Kenya said the project reflects its broader commitment to linking waste management operations with community participation. Its activities include waste evacuation, market clean-ups, organic waste recovery and environmental awareness campaigns.

The company’s approach emphasises that keeping communities clean requires more than waste collection. It also depends on how households, institutions and businesses dispose of waste and whether communities adopt practices that reduce pollution and encourage reuse.

The farm comes as environmental campaigns continue to promote practical action at the community level, including recycling, tree planting and sustainable use of natural resources. By involving learners and local stakeholders, the initiative seeks to make environmental responsibility part of everyday life.

The project also reflects the potential for collaboration between private companies, public leaders and educational institutions to support a cleaner and more sustainable Nairobi.

Zoomlion Kenya is part of a wider African waste management vision that promotes locally driven solutions to environmental challenges. Through the Dandora initiative, the company is seeking to connect its waste management work with environmental education and community empowerment.

As Kenya marks Mazingira Day, the initiative reinforces the message that environmental protection requires collective responsibility and sustained participation from individuals, schools, businesses and government institutions.

For the Wangu Comprehensive School community, the farm offers an opportunity to turn environmental awareness into practical learning, while demonstrating how organic waste can support productive activities and contribute to a cleaner neighbourhood.

The campaign’s message is clear: “The Clean Nairobi We All Want!”
