Bunge La Mwananchi defends Senator Haji, calls for peace in Garissa

Nairobi, 18 November 2024 – Civic group Bunge La Mwananchi has stepped in to clear the air over allegations against Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, urging leaders to focus on unity rather than divisive politics.

The group denied claims that Senator Haji was involved in clan clashes that led to the tragic deaths of six young men from his clan. They described the allegations made by the Garissa Woman Representative as baseless and misleading.

“Senator Haji has shown commendable leadership in dealing with the tragedy,” said the Bunge La Mwananchi chairman. “He has taken proactive steps, including compensation for the bereaved families, to prevent further violence and promote peace among communities in Garissa.”

Bunge La Mwananchi praised the Senator’s efforts to promote peaceful co-existence and condemned the politicisation of sensitive security issues. They retracted earlier misinformation about the incident and apologised to Senator Haji, stressing the importance of responsible leadership.

The group also called on the MP to uphold ethical leadership as enshrined in Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution. They suggested that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summon her to clarify her statements and warned against using grief as a platform for political gain.

“Public figures have a duty to handle security issues with care and prioritise the well-being of communities,” the chairperson added. “Using tragedies for personal ambitions only risks exacerbating tensions in Garissa County.”

Bunge La Mwananchi concluded by urging all stakeholders to work towards promoting peace and unity in the region. They expressed the hope that their clarification would encourage constructive dialogue and a deeper understanding of the issues affecting the county.

This call for accountability and harmony underscores the importance of prioritising the welfare of the community over divisive rhetoric.
