Nairobi, October 2, 2025 – East African Breweries PLC (EABL) has announced that more than 70 percent of its manufacturing is now powered by renewable energy, marking a major milestone in its sustainability journey and positioning the brewer as a regional leader in climate action.
The achievement is the result of sustained investments in biomass plants, energy recovery systems, and the electrification of operations, which have significantly reduced reliance on fossil fuels. Over the past year, EABL has fully utilized its biomass plants in Nairobi, Kampala, and Kisumu, cut direct emissions, and boosted energy efficiency across all markets. The brewer has also piloted Zero Liquid Discharge systems to recycle and reuse water while reducing energy demand, and introduced electric forklifts to replace diesel-powered ones.
These initiatives have lowered the company’s environmental footprint while strengthening resilience against rising energy costs and stricter climate regulations.
Alongside its energy transition, EABL has reported major progress in water stewardship. In 2025, the company replenished more than 700 million litres of water—well above its 400 million litre target. This builds on the 400 million litres replenished in 2024 and brings its cumulative contribution to over two billion litres.
EABL also highlighted its regenerative agriculture programmes, which have doubled yields for some farmers, underscoring its wider sustainability strategy, Spirit of Progress, which integrates environmental stewardship, social impact, and inclusive growth.
Speaking during the launch of the Fifth Sustainability Report, EABL Group Managing Director and CEO Jane Karuku said:
“This year’s report reflects how we are embedding sustainability into every drop of our business. From protecting vital water sources to transitioning to renewable energy, we are proving that long-term business success goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship and social progress.”
The 2025 report reaffirms EABL’s commitment to sustainability “from grain to glass.” It emphasizes continued investments in regenerative farming, circular packaging, and community well-being, with transparency and accountability at the core of its progress.
