NAIROBI, February 19, 2026 — The Nairobi Hospital has achieved a major milestone after securing two internationally recognized certifications in environmental management and occupational health and safety.
The hospital received ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) recertification for the sixth consecutive cycle and earned its first ISO 45001:2018 Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) certification. Both certifications were awarded by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
The achievement reaffirms the hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality healthcare in a safe, secure and environmentally sustainable environment.
The recertification of ISO 14001:2015 highlights the hospital’s long-standing dedication to environmental stewardship. Meanwhile, the inaugural ISO 45001:2018 certification marks a significant step in strengthening workplace health and safety systems for staff and stakeholders.
Speaking during the award ceremony, KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari praised the hospital’s consistency and leadership in standards compliance.
“By attaining ISO 45001, you affirm that the wellbeing of your staff is safeguarded deliberately and proactively. By sustaining ISO 14001 through six certification cycles, you demonstrate that environmental stewardship is not episodic — it is embedded,” she said.
Over the years, The Nairobi Hospital has built a strong culture of continuous quality improvement by implementing and maintaining internationally recognized standards issued by the International Organization for Standardization.
In addition to the newly awarded certifications, the hospital holds ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and ISO 22000:2018 Food Safety Management System certifications. Its laboratory is accredited to ISO 15189:2022, and the institution continues to pursue Joint Commission International Accreditation to align with global healthcare benchmarks.
Speaking after receiving the certificates, Chief Executive Officer Felix Osano emphasized that quality remains a continuous journey rather than a final destination.
“Environmental sustainability and safety benchmarks are crucial aspects in today’s dynamic healthcare environment,” Osano said. “It is our commitment to continue elevating our standards to be better positioned to execute our mandate in society.”
He added that certification in environmental and occupational health and safety management reinforces the hospital’s responsibility to create a safe environment for current and future generations.
Osano further reaffirmed the hospital’s focus on continuous system improvement and integration of management systems to enhance data-driven decision-making. He noted that aligning operations with global healthcare quality benchmarks remains a top priority.
To strengthen its partnership with the hospital, KEBS announced the establishment of a dedicated green channel to ensure faster turnaround times and priority service delivery for calibration and technical support services.
Ngari said the move will support the hospital’s continued pursuit of excellence and reinforce its compliance journey.
The dual certifications followed a comprehensive and rigorous evaluation process. The journey included leadership commitment, staff training, systems gap analysis, development of policies and standard operating procedures, internal audits and management reviews.
KEBS conducted two-stage external audits in September and October 2025 before granting the certifications.
Hospital officials say the outcome reflects teamwork across departments and a sustained commitment to operational excellence.
The certifications further strengthen The Nairobi Hospital’s position as a leading healthcare institution in Kenya. They demonstrate its dedication to enhancing patient safety, promoting environmental sustainability in healthcare delivery and improving operational efficiency.
In addition, the ISO 45001 certification introduces a proactive, risk-based framework to strengthen occupational health and safety practices. The ISO 22000 certification continues to support safe, high-quality nutrition services within the hospital.
As the hospital celebrates this achievement, management maintains that quality improvement remains ongoing.
The latest recognition not only affirms institutional resilience but also signals The Nairobi Hospital’s readiness to meet evolving healthcare demands while safeguarding patients, staff and the environment.
For the hospital, excellence is not a one-time accomplishment. It is a continuous journey toward safer systems, stronger governance and better patient-centered care in Kenya and beyond.
