Experts Call for More Support in HIV Programs.

Health experts have raised alarm over declining support for key populations affected by HIV. Speaking today during a press briefing at a Nairobi hotel, they urged the government and global partners to step up interventions before progress is reversed.

Dr. Victor Akelo, the Kenya Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance Site Director (CHAMPS) stressed the urgent need for inclusive programs. He noted that women, young people, and marginalized groups such as sex workers are among the most vulnerable.

“There are many programs providing care for women affected by HIV, and USAID has played a key role. However, we are not in a good place. Funding for neglected populations like sex workers and men who have sex with men has been reduced,” Dr. Akelo said.

His concerns were echoed by Professor Nelly Mugo from the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). She emphasized that HIV is not confined by borders, religion, or economic status. She also highlighted the need for local production of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs).

“Infectious diseases do not respect boundaries. That is why international funding has been crucial. However, we need to start producing our own ARVs, just like South Africa and India,” Professor Mugo stated.

Dr. Sarah Gitome, the Acting Deputy Director of Sexual Reproductive, Adolescent, and Child Health at KEMRI, pointed out gaps in policy implementation. She urged stakeholders to ensure that policies are not only created but also effectively put into action.

The experts warned that without proper funding, the fight against HIV could suffer major setbacks. They called on the government to act swiftly and ensure that all affected groups receive the necessary care and support.
