Hemingways Watamu is set to host the 21st edition of the Friends of Kenya Fishing Tournament, Kenya’s only 36-hour sport fishing competition.
The tournament taking place on March 4th and 5th is a highly anticipated annual event that brings together local and international anglers for an unparalleled fishing experience that combines competition, camaraderie, and a strong commitment to marine conservation.
“This is the only tournament in Kenya that includes night fishing, making it a true test of endurance and skill,” says Hemingways Watamu Fishing Centre Manager Erastus Kalandi.
“Anglers can expect a thrilling challenge as they navigate the waters of the Kenyan coast, competing against the elements and each other to land the most prized catches,” he said.
Mr Kalandi noted that beyond the competition, the tournament fosters a deep sense of community among participants and spectators alike. From experienced anglers to first-time attendees, the tournament creates a vibrant and engaging atmosphere where everyone can share in the excitement.

Hemingways Watamu, located within a protected marine park, has long been a champion of sustainable sport fishing. As a founding member and sponsor of the Watamu Marine Association, the hotel actively supports marine conservation initiatives, including the Kenya Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Programme, KMMREC.
“Given our location within a marine park, we take conservation seriously,” said Kalandi. “Through our support of catch-and-release fishing, we ensure that sport fishing remains a sustainable activity for future generations.”
The Friends of Kenya Fishing Tournament adheres to a strict catch-and-release policy for billfish, which has been standard practice in Kenya since the early 1990s. This approach not only protects vital fish populations but also provides invaluable data for research into the migratory patterns of billfish across the world’s oceans.
While the thrill of the catch is the main draw, the tournament offers much more. Hemingways Watamu will host a series of social events where guests and participants can unwind, share their experiences, and celebrate the sport.
“The beauty of this tournament is not just in the fishing but in the camaraderie,” noted Kalandi. “Guests get to interact, exchange stories, and truly appreciate the rich marine heritage that Watamu has to offer.”
Additionally, the event serves as an introduction to sport fishing for hotel guests who may not have fished before, further fostering interest in sustainable marine activities.
The Friends of Kenya Fishing Tournament is more than just a competition- it’s a celebration of sport, conservation, and community. Whether you’re an experienced angler or a first-time visitor, the tournament offers something for everyone.
