NAIROBI, June 26, 2026 — Embakasi East MP Babu Owino on Friday represented more than 200 Gen Z protesters at the Milimani Law Courts after they were arrested during demonstrations marking the June 25 anniversary protests.
Speaking outside the court, Owino said the young people had been detained while commemorating the anniversary of last year’s demonstrations and seeking accountability from the government.
The court released all the suspects on a cash bail of KSh 1,000 each, allowing them to leave custody as investigations continue.
Among those released was a mother of a seven-month-old baby who had been charged alongside the other protesters. According to Owino, the court acquitted her of all charges.
The MP described the arrests as an attempt to intimidate young people exercising their constitutional rights and pledged to continue offering legal support to protesters facing court cases arising from the demonstrations.
The June 25 anniversary protests drew large numbers of young people across Nairobi and other parts of the country, with participants calling for justice, economic reforms and greater government accountability.
Police have maintained that they were enforcing public order during the demonstrations.
