KenGen Deepens Support for Drivers Ahead of 2026 WRC Safari Rally
By Peace Muthoka
Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has intensified its support for local rally drivers as preparations gather pace for the 2026 WRC Safari Rally scheduled for March 12–15.
The energy giant has formalised sponsorship for Azeli Ishmael and Andrew Muiruri, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing Kenyan talent ahead of one of the most demanding events on the World Rally Championship calendar. The Safari Rally, known for its rugged terrain and unpredictable conditions, remains a true test of endurance, skill and machine reliability.
By backing the drivers, KenGen signals a deliberate shift from symbolic sponsorship to strategic investment in sport. The company says supporting local competitors is part of a broader plan to strengthen Kenya’s footprint on the global motorsport stage while inspiring the next generation of rally enthusiasts.
KenGen Managing Director and CEO Eng. Peter Njenga said the partnership reflects the company’s long-term vision. He noted that rallying mirrors the values that define KenGen’s operations resilience, precision, innovation and consistency under pressure.
He explained that the Safari Rally offers more than high-speed competition. Instead, it provides a global platform where Kenya can showcase its landscapes, engineering capability and growing influence in international sport. For KenGen, he added, the rally presents an opportunity to align national pride with sustainable energy leadership.
As Africa’s leading renewable energy producer, KenGen views the event as a stage to demonstrate how clean power can drive progress across sectors. The company believes that just as renewable energy powers industries and homes, it can also fuel ambition in sport and enterprise.
With top international crews expected to line up in March, anticipation is already building among Kenyan fans. For Ishmael and Muiruri, competing on home soil comes with both pressure and pride. However, with structured backing from KenGen, the drivers now have renewed confidence as they prepare to battle some of the world’s best.
Through this strengthened partnership, KenGen aims not only to boost performance on the track but also to cement its role as a champion of Kenyan excellence beyond the energy sector.
