Kenya has reached a key milestone in its preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025, with the official handover of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, to the tournament’s Local Organizing Committee (LOC).
Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, H.E. Salim Mvurya, presided over the handover ceremony, describing the event as a major step forward as the country races against time to host Africa’s top footballing nations this August.
“This moment marks a critical milestone as we accelerate preparations for CHAN 2025,” said Mvurya. “The handover follows extensive refurbishments carried out in line with recommendations by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), a clear sign that Kenya is in top gear and fully prepared to host the tournament.”
The refurbished Kasarani complex, along with its two adjacent training grounds, will serve as the tournament’s main venue. It is also set to host the final match and act as the home base for Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars.
Mvurya emphasized that the milestone is not only a win for Kenya but for the entire East African region, adding that it cements Kenya’s place as a prime destination for major international sports events.
“This is a proud achievement for the country and the region. It sets the stage for us to host future continental tournaments, including the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” he said.
The handover brought together key figures including Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, members of the LOC Steering Committee led by National Chairperson Michael Mosonye, senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, and other representatives from the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports.
