NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Patriotic Front leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka has unveiled a new leadership team as the party steps up preparations for the 2027 General Election, appointing former Cabinet Minister Jamleck Irungu Kamau as chairman, Nyali MP Mohamed Ali as Deputy Party Leader Designate and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru as its first spokesperson.
The changes are part of Kalonzo’s plan to expand and renew the party’s leadership and give it a broader national outlook as it seeks to position itself for the next election.
Kalonzo announced the appointments while revisiting a mandate given to him by delegates during the party’s National Delegates Congress at Uhuru Park, Nairobi, on October 10 last year. Delegates gave him two responsibilities — to pursue the presidency in 2027 and to expand the party’s leadership to reflect Kenya’s counties, generations and political interests.
He said the latest appointments were a fulfilment of the second part of that mandate.
Kamau takes over as chairman with extensive experience in government, Parliament and coalition politics. He is a former Cabinet Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development and served two terms as the Member of Parliament for Kigumo.
He also served as a Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission and was National Vice-Chairman of the Party of National Unity. His political career has included involvement in negotiations that brought together different political formations in government.
Kalonzo said that experience would be important as Wiper seeks to build a wider political coalition ahead of the 2027 election.
He described Kamau as a seasoned coalition builder who had spent decades balancing competing political interests and negotiating under pressure. That experience, he said, would help the party as it works towards establishing what he termed a “United Alternative Government-in-Waiting.”
The appointment of Mohamed Ali brings a younger generation into Wiper’s senior leadership and strengthens the party’s presence in the Coast region.
Ali, the Nyali MP, entered politics after a career in investigative journalism, where he gained prominence through Jicho Pevu. His investigations exposed corruption and other issues of public interest, earning him a reputation for holding powerful institutions to account.
Kalonzo said Ali had carried that commitment to accountability into public service. The MP currently serves as Chairman of the Finance Committee of the Parliamentary Service Commission and has also been involved in community programmes through the Mohamed Ali Foundation.
The foundation has supported scholarships, free medical camps and initiatives aimed at assisting persons living with disabilities.
Kalonzo said Ali’s appointment would give a stronger voice to young Kenyans and the Coast region within the party’s top leadership.
He said the MP represents a generation seeking a country where integrity and public service are valued over political patronage.
Wiper has also created a new position of party spokesperson, with constitutional lawyer Ndegwa Njiru becoming the first person to hold the office.
Njiru, who was admitted to the Kenyan Bar in 2011, is the founder of Ndegwa & Ndegwa Advocates. He has represented clients in a number of high-profile constitutional and political matters, including impeachment cases and cases involving detained politicians and young Kenyans arrested while exercising their constitutional rights.
Kalonzo said Njiru’s legal background and experience defending constitutional rights would be valuable as the party strengthens its public communication.
As spokesperson, Njiru will be expected to articulate Wiper’s position on national and political issues and provide a direct link between the party leadership and the public.
Kalonzo described the three appointments as deliberate choices aimed at building a stronger and more diverse leadership team.
He said Kamau brings political and coalition-building experience, Ali represents a younger generation and the Coast region, while Njiru brings legal expertise and a strong focus on constitutional rights.
“These are not appointments of convenience but of conviction,” Kalonzo said, signalling that the leadership changes are part of a wider restructuring of the party ahead of the next election.
He said the process of renewing Wiper’s leadership would continue, suggesting that more appointments could follow as the party expands its national structure.
The changes also come as Kalonzo steps up efforts to unite opposition parties ahead of the 2027 polls.
As Party Leader of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, he said he convened opposition consultations in Nairobi on August 4 to push forward discussions on building a united political front.
Kalonzo said the opposition must overcome its divisions and work towards a single, credible alternative to the current administration.
He maintained that the consultations would continue until opposition parties and leaders committed to challenging what he described as “captured governance” are brought together under one political arrangement.
For Wiper, the new leadership is therefore expected to play a central role in strengthening the party’s organisation, expanding its national reach and preparing it for the political contests ahead of the 2027 General Election.
