Wiper Picks Mwangangi for Migwani By-Election as Political Contest Intensifies

Kenya — Wiper Party has picked Munyoki Mwangangi, popularly known as Bookshop, to contest the Migwani Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) by-election scheduled for November 17, 2026, as the party moves to consolidate its support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Mwangangi received his nomination certificate on Tuesday, October 13, after nine other aspirants pledged to support his candidature, in a move aimed at bringing party members together ahead of the contest.
The nominee is expected to lead Wiper’s campaign in a race that has attracted interest from rival political parties seeking to strengthen their grassroots presence in Kitui County.
Mwangangi’s selection comes as political parties step up mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections, with ward-level contests providing an opportunity to test their support and organisational strength.
Wiper Organising Secretary Robert Mbui accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of seeking to challenge the party’s influence in Migwani, alleging that the government had been devoting considerable attention to the region ahead of the by-election.
Mbui said Wiper was prepared to face its political opponents and cautioned against attempts to use financial resources to influence voters.
“We are ready for them,” Mbui said, expressing confidence in the party’s ability to compete in the upcoming contest.
He also criticised the immediate former MCA for leaving the elective position to take up an appointment as a clerk at the Kitui County Assembly, arguing that the move had created the vacancy that necessitated the by-election.
Mbui further alleged that the circumstances surrounding the vacancy had become part of a broader political contest between Wiper and the Kenya Kwanza administration. The allegations were made by the Wiper official and had not been independently established.
With Mwangangi now confirmed as Wiper’s candidate, attention is turning to the rival parties expected to contest the seat.
Among the candidates named are Andrew Kaleli of the National Liberal Party (NLP) and Hon. Christine Mwende of the National Economic Development Party (NEDP), led by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is also expected to announce its candidate before the November 17 by-election.
The contest is set to test Wiper’s ability to mobilise its supporters and maintain its political influence in the ward as parties position themselves for the 2027 General Election.
For Mwangangi, the immediate task will be to consolidate support within Wiper and translate the backing of the other aspirants into a strong campaign against candidates from rival parties.
