Safaricom PLC has announced a scheduled system upgrade on its M-PESA platform, set for the early hours of Monday, September 22, 2025.
The maintenance will run from 12:30 a.m. to 3:30 a.m., during which all M-PESA services — including airtime purchase — will be temporarily unavailable.
According to the company, the upgrade is part of ongoing investments aimed at keeping M-PESA safe, secure, and reliable for millions of users across the country.
“For 18 years, M-PESA has continued to transform lives across Kenya, connecting our customers to opportunities every day. To support this, we will be conducting a scheduled system upgrade,” Safaricom said in a statement.
The telco assured customers that the timing was carefully chosen to minimize any inconvenience. It also expressed gratitude to users for their continued trust, reaffirming its commitment to delivering innovative digital and financial solutions.
Safaricom has advised customers to complete any planned transactions ahead of the maintenance window.
Since its launch in 2007, M-PESA has grown into Kenya’s most widely used mobile money service, now serving over 30 million active users.
