The Diaspora Technical Working Group (DTWG) conducted an official site visit to the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project on June 19, 2025, observing significant strides toward providing modern, dignified homes for thousands of Nairobi residents.
Located in Mukuru kwa Njenga, just 7 km south of the city centre, the project spans approximately 56 acres and is Kenya’s largest affordable housing initiative. Construction began in October 2022, and to date, 1,080 units across various phases have been completed and handed over to beneficiaries—primarily former slum residents—who now enjoy essential services such as water, electricity, toilets, and cooking gas.
Beneficiary registration and verification are progressing swiftly, with over 970 households already confirmed following an intensive vetting phase. The project offers a rent-to-own payment plan: bedsitters at KSh 3,000/month, one-bedroom units at KSh 4,000, and two-bedroom units at KSh 5,000, payable over 30 years. The initiative has also created thousands of jobs, engaging more than 3,000 workers onsite and contributing to broader national employment.

The DTWG’s visit illuminated not only the robust infrastructure roads, sewer systems, walkways, and community amenities like health centres and retail spaces but also the project’s model for dignified urban renewal and community upliftment. The team acknowledged the importance of inclusive resettlement processes and community engagement as the government undertakes large scale housing reforms.
“Our diaspora community is deeply encouraged by the tangible progress in Mukuru. This project is a blueprint for affordable, inclusive housing—and the diaspora stands ready to support through investment, skills exchange, and partnerships,” said DTWG Chair.
