Kenya’s leading institutions of higher learning, Mount Kenya University (MKU), Strathmore University, and Riara University, have joined forces in the inaugural University PR Challenge, a first-of-its-kind competition aimed at discovering and developing the next generation of public relations leaders.
The challenge will be held on August 26, 2025, at Aga Khan University, which also serves as the official academic partner of the initiative. The University PR Challenge brings together student-led teams tasked with solving real-world PR case studies. These case studies, curated by senior industry professionals, focus on critical areas such as crisis communication, brand strategy, digital engagement, and corporate reputation management.
Student teams are required to apply strategic insight and creative thinking under realistic, high-pressure conditions. Their submissions are currently being evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges drawn from Kenya’s PR and media landscape.
To ensure objectivity, the judging process remains confidential. One panel member, speaking anonymously, notes that “The level of creativity and depth of strategy from these students is inspiring. They are already showing the kind of thinking the PR industry needs.”
Each participating university has appointed a faculty mentor to guide students through the challenge. Koome Ikunyua, the faculty coordinator at Mount Kenya University, highlights the value of hands-on experience. “It is refreshing to see our students operate in such a dynamic, real-world environment. This challenge is a true bridge between classroom learning and professional execution.”
On her side, Elizabeth Amollo of Riara University says that, “This initiative is not just timely, it is essential. It builds confidence, enhances competence, and gives students authentic exposure to the communication profession.”
Strathmore University’s Dr. Esther Kingo’ri echoes this, adding that the challenge pushes students to collaborate, research, and think strategically. “This is one of the most valuable learning experiences they can have.”
As the first competition of its kind in the region, the University PR Challenge aims to become an annual platform that connects academic training with the practical demands of the communication industry. It promotes innovation, ethical practice, and excellence in public relations education.
The winners will be announced just a day before the official opening of Africa Global Public Relations Week (AGPRW), a major continental event bringing together communication experts, academics, and industry leaders.
The top team will receive mentorship from industry leaders, internship opportunities, and public recognition, positioning the competition as a transformative launchpad for Kenya’s future PR talent.
